The Musical Box
There have been a lot of incredible opening songs in the Genesis catalog. Pretty much everything except Invisible Touch and No Son of Mine
-
. I like the idea that Gabriel played it live with a stocking mask on and I like that he did a fair bit of research into the story that inspired it -
Did he really do a lot or research? I thought I remembered Gabriel saying it was based on a newspaper article that he had read, but then was unable to find the article when writing the song.
Anyway, I gave the song an 8. Some good playing and an interesting story, but there's just way too much going on.

Yes I read:
Just curious, but where did you read this?
Quote
He said to me that he’d got a tape of Lennon talking to him; I’m not sure who he was talking to,Huh?

Was there nowhere in New York he could get the albums? Dodgy sounding claim.
Yeah, I call complete b.s. on this. Hackett never mention this til about 10 years ago. It started out with him saying something about hearing John Lennon on the radio in New York saying that Genesis were one of the bands he was listening to. Then, about a year or two ago, it expanded into this "true sons of the Beatles" thing. And now, the bit about having the Genesis albums shipped to him in NY.
If John Lennon really said any of this, why has it never shown up anywhere except from Hackett? As obsessively as the Beatles have been chronicled, somebody would have a copy of this interview. Why didn't Hackett mention it for the first 35-40 years after the interview? Why did he suddenly remember new details of the interview recently ("sons of the Beatles", shipping the albums to NYC)

I'm sure Concord will already be planning to bring out new editions of the back catalogue... so whilst not the boxes of old, hopefully new improved versions with ever expanded extras.
Maybe starting with the 50th Anniversary Edition of The Lamb next year.
I don't 100% understand the details of the Concord deal, but I don't think they purchased the Gabriel/Hackett era stuff.

. I used to speculate, years ago, what it would have been like in some alternate universe where, instead of Ant leaving Genesis, Tony had left. I then imagined what it could have been like if Ant had moved on to keyboards and Steve had still come in on guitar. It could have been very interesting indeed! (They could also have played duel guitars on some tracks too).
It would definitely be a very different Genesis. To me, Tony has always defined Genesis' "sound". I don't doubt that the band as imagined above would have put out some good music, but it would have been radically different from what Genesis became.

Just listened to it for the first time in about 30 years. While the music is quite interesting in places, I'm put off by the sound of the album......everything is very synthetic sounding, no warm, natural sounding instruments.
-
Backdrifter's post got me thinking of the original intent of the OP. I took it to mean that the vocals come in before any instruments or at the same time as the first instrument.
So, to me a song like The Musical Box wouldn't fit. But, I can't be 100% sure how the OP meant it.

Like others, I have had no interest in this album and have only heard a few tracks. I respect that Phil loves this song catalogue (as do I) and enjoys singing these songs. I don't care to hear him be a Motown cover artist.
That sums up my feelings, although I haven't heard any of Phil's covers from this album

And I'm 62
So, you're one of those young 'uns

Remember Tony said on the album they participated in writing the violins and brass arrangements to gain some control over it, as opposed to the preceding singles in which they had zero control over the violins.
This is the first time that I’ve ever heard that the members of Genesis had any control of the strings/brass. Everything I have ever heard/read is that the members of the band ( especially Ant) were really pissed off when they heard the brass and strings all over the album.

rkive Thank you!

Can you put this in context for those of us who don't recognize this person? Thanks.

No Track of the Week for 8/14-8/20?

Only a four from me I’m afraid. Beautifully sung but to me it’s boring and never gets anywhere. In a longer song I’d be looking for more drama or a complete change of pace, more light and shade etc.
You've described exactly my thoughts on 'Driving the Last Spike', which we discussed recently.

Worst: ITC/TCOS/ITQT/The Colony of Slippermen/AG (the transition from ITQT to TCOS is too jarring and having the latter as well as the former makes the medley a little too bloated - either one or the other, guys). The 1992 Old Medley is another contender (starts off with a good strong half but the second half starting with Firth of Fifth pretty much kills the momentum for me, plus the I Know What I like sub-medley puts the brakes on everything save for the extract from Stagnation), which is curious because the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway/Musical Box medley from the 1977 tour is brilliant.
I'm a little confused. What is ITQT? Also, I assumed TCOS was Colony of Slippermen, but then you Have Colony of Slipperman typed out later in the same medley.
I'm confused as to what the actual medley is.
In the Cage
The Colony of Slippermen???
The Colony of Slippermen (again?)

Welcome to the board!

The show in 2007 for me was pure joy and the unexpected reunion at the time had elements of SOTB feel which I didn't really get last year.
What is SOTB?
