I think the fantasy atmosphere was still prevalent on ATTWT albeit a little watered-down without Hackett's guitar and any instrumentals.
It was Duke, for me, where this began to change with Heathaze, Open Door and Evidence of Autumn the only ones sounding ATTWT-y. The rest (which I love) is more sunny, breezy and American rather than pastoral and English.
I too am intrigued what ATTWT would have sounded like with Steve.

15. A truly wonderful track. A beautiful intro followed by some fantastically-sung observational lyrics. I particularly like the transition from verse to chorus as well. It's autumnal tone perfectly fits Wind and Wuthering.
A shame it was never played live in part due to the technology of the time. It was a popular choice in the Your favourite songs they never played live thread.
Do wish somehow Steve could have appeared either in 07 or 21/22 to play it with the band.

I actually think Ant has the best range and most emotive singing voice of the four non-lead-vocalists who have sung on their solo albums (TB, SH, AP and MR).
And I agree, WATE is a great album. Over the many years, I've flip/flopped between Wise and Geese in citing my favourite of Ant's output.
Would definitely agree with what you say about AP's voice. Not amazing but a notch above TB's and SH's serviceable but unspectacular ranges. MR's? Well...

Listening to it for the first time.
Not a huge fan of the vocal tracks (Jack Hues and Alistair Gordon are the only Tony solo vocalists I like) but the instrumentals are up there with the best he's done. Certainly superior to the ones on Bankstatement and The Fugitive, and on a par with ACF.

Yep, it sounds pretty much like what I can expect from Steve these days. There are bits of promising ideas, shoved together in a way that has no logic or flow, making Steve sound like he has about a 20-second attention span. The best ideas fail to be explored to any satisfying extent, and the time they should have been given is instead handed over to a bunch of pointless meandering. Overall, the result is more interesting for what it could have been than for what it actually is.
So... it's got good stuff in it, but it isn't what it could have been.
I think Steve is the only artist I've ever wished would make his material a little more conventional, if only in terms of song structure.
Have to agree with this. A promising opening which peters out into what seems like random bits of music stuck together. About a third of these bits are then any good.
It thrashes around between speeds and styles far too much – just like too much of his recent work. Some good stuff in there which is why it's so frustrating.
The vocals and the arrangement let down some good glimpses of music and great guitar work as ever.

Great review!

Such a tough question as I personally think they nailed it on every album.
IT is the only one I would potentially switch but what for? LoC is the only real candidate unless you go rogue and open up with the Do the Neurotic?

I've never got on with it. Agree with what has been previously said that the lyrics don't fit with the music. I much prefer Get em' out by Friday as one of Gabriel's story songs.
Not bad per se but one of their poorest epics and the weakest song on Selling for sure.
8 points.

MR: Smallcreep's Day
AP: Geese and the Ghost
PC: Face Value
TB: A Curious Feeling
SH: Beyond the Shrouded Horizon
PG: Scratch
RW: Chasing RainbowsActing Very Strange is awful and I'm not a fan of Cured or Security.

Trick and Wind are my favourites (might partly explain my username!).
I love the colour of Trick and the way the characters on it relate to the songs on the album.
Wind is sparse, simple and beautiful.
ATTW3 is decent too. I like the moody colour scheme.
Duke has an iconic, cartoony feel to it that was so different to what came before.
Abacab is solid and I don't dislike Shapes as much as everyone else.
IT just looks dated now and simply isn't interesting.
WCD has a stronger cover but the Genesis logo is full-on ugly. Such a shame that they persevere with it.
