Setlists

Below is a list of all setlists from the (Still) Growing Up Tour. Due to the different requirements of each leg of the tour (with and without a round stage, short festival appearances, open-air and indoor concerts), there were quite a few changes over the course of two years – although there were, of course, songs that were played almost everywhere.

During the pre-concerts, a successful set list was sought, and there were still some changes during the first US performances. In the second leg through Europe, the set list was finalised and there were no more variations, also with a view to the DVD recording. It was not until the third leg, the Stripped Down Tour without a round stage, that other songs were tried out. Last year, for the Still Growing Up Tour, which was added due to the great success, there was another significantly changed set list, in which some of the more contemplative songs were replaced by audience favourites, which also reduced the use of the ‘Skystage’ in the round stage construction. For the festival appearances at the end, some of which were significantly shorter, the setlist was reduced to the essentials.

After almost exactly two years and nearly 130 shows, the Growing Up Tour comes to an end in July 2004. Two DVDs preserve the concerts for posterity, and a family documentary is made on Leg 1 in North America.

At the beginning, Gabriel tried to play quite a few songs from his current album live, but as the tour progressed, fewer and fewer made it into the set. By the time the festival appearances at the end of the tour rolled around, UP was no longer represented at all. Instead, the album OVO came to the fore, with one song even receiving new lyrics (White Ashes). Two previously unknown songs were also played at times (Animal Nation and Baby Man).

All in all, however, the enthusiasm was great to be able to experience Peter Gabriel again in such detail after a 10-year absence. He had become heavier and older, but his voice seemed more robust than had been expected based on previous short appearances. Some still thought that he would not go on tour again so soon, that this might even be the last chance to see him. The future would teach them otherwise…
