Steve Hackett – Recording Compendium, Part 10: 2012 – 2017
With the double album “Genesis Revisited II”, Steve Hackett catapults himself back into his musical past, which he now celebrates in style, especially at concerts. In between, however, he also releases the two rock albums “Wolflight” and “The Night Siren”…
Part 10: Genesis Revisited II / Wolflight / The Night Siren | 2012 – 2017
Last update: 03/12/2025 | Overview | back to part 9 | on to part 11

Steve Hackett has something very special in store for all fans of Genesis’ early years in 2012. Songs from 1971 to 1976 that were not included on his first Genesis Revisited album from 1996 are set to get a fresh new lease of life! He will be taking six months to do this and inviting all kinds of guest musicians and singers to join him. The studio work will be interrupted by two guest appearances in January with John Wetton (Real World) and the globally successful ‘Genesis clones’ of The Musical Box (Watcher Of The Skies), as well as the second part of the Braking The Waves tour through England from 10 to 27 February – here again with Lee Pomeroy on bass.
At the beginning of April, Steve also plays another gig with Djabe in the Austrian capital, which is also recorded but would only be available in its entirety ten years later.

Steve Hackett is also looking for a permanent singer for the planned tour of his Genesis Revisited project and in mid-April decides on the Swedish singer Nad Sylvan, who will also be featured on the studio recordings. Otherwise, there are a few isolated performances in Italy, Tel Aviv, England and Germany between April and July – here, among others, with performers from the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.
However, the main focus until summer is clearly on the recordings for his planned album, or rather double album! A total of 21 tracks are recorded, 17 of which (including Horizons) are from the Genesis repertoire from 1971 to 1976 and 4 others from Hackett’s solo repertoire from 1975 to 1983, but are related to Genesis. In addition to his regular band, numerous guests participate in the new recordings, most of which remain close to the originals. These include old acquaintances such as Nick Magnus, John Hackett, John Wetton, Phil Mulford and Nick Beggs, as well as newer and completely new collaborators such as Collins’ son Simon Collins, Dave Kerzner, Nik Kershaw, Steven Wilson, Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Jakko Jakszyk, Jeremy Stacey, Francis Dunnery, Lee Pomeroy, Conrad Keely, Mikael Akerfeldt and, of course, Nad Sylvan! Recording for the double album Genesis Revisited II was completed in July.

After recording Genesis Revisited II, Steve Hackett entered into an unusual collaboration with Elizabeth Fraser, the former singer of The Cocteau Twins, who had already been featured on Peter Gabriel’s OVO album at the turn of the millennium and had previously sung Massive Attack’s biggest hit, Teardrop. She and her partner Damon Reece from Massive Attack share their enthusiasm for Genesis’ The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and want to involve Steve in their new joint project. Frazer’s ‘comeback’ performance at the Meltdown Festival in early August gives a preview of a new song accompanied only by Steve, which will not be released on record until ten years later…

Otherwise, Steve is gathering his strength in the ‘calm before the storm’ for the coming year, in which he will be travelling a lot…

For Steve, the new year will be dominated by his Genesis Revisited World Tour. However, there will be a small collaboration before the tour rehearsals begin. The joint project by Marco Lo Muscio, John Hackett and Carlo Matteucci, in which they reinterpret some classics of progressive rock, also calls on Steve.

The Genesis Revisited World Tour finally kicks off at the end of March in an unusual setting on the Caribbean Sea, at the first Cruise To The Edge festival on a cruise ship, followed by two gigs on the mainland before returning to Europe, where the band will be performing in larger venues than before from mid-April to the end of May. The show at London’s legendary Hammersmith, for which a few ‘special guests’ are invited, including John Wetton, Nik Kershaw, Steve Rothery, Jakko M. Jakszyk and Amanda Lehmann, will be recorded for release.

Steve Hackett‘s Genesis Revisited World Tour will enter its next phase in mid-September, with a month-long tour of North America. Immediately afterwards, Steve and his band will spend a week performing on various stages in their native Britain. Steve will now take to a historic stage for the first time: his concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall with special guests John Wetton, Roine Stolt and ex-Genesis frontman Ray Wilson will be recorded for another live release from the current tour…

After the Genesis line-up from ’71-’75 met for a joint interview at London’s Sunbeam Studios in mid-March for the documentary Sum Of The Parts, Steve Hackett and his band will kick off the (for now) final leg of their successful Genesis Revisited World Tour in the USA at the end of March, concluding on a cruise ship for this year’s Cruise To The Edge festival in mid-April. From the south-west of the world, the tour will then move to the north-east with gigs in Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Norway and finally many other countries in Europe, culminating in Portugal at the end of May.
After that, it will be high time for Steve to start working on his next album with new material, as autumn is already reserved for an ‘extension’ of the tour due to high demand.
The studio work will be interrupted in the second half of July with three of their own band gigs in Italy and three performances with Djabe, excerpts of which will be released from the Óbuda Summer Fest in Budapest…

Under the tour motto Genesis Extended, Hackett fans will be treated to an encore in the United Kingdom and North America from mid-October to mid-December. The short remainder of the year will then be devoted to the final recordings for the soon-to-be-released new Steve Hackett album Wolflight. Due to the relatively short time window between tours, the album will have to make do with significantly fewer guests than on Genesis Revisited II.

Steve is also part of a unique charity project in the form of a prog all-star band, which is re-recording a Hackett instrumental classic as a vocal number and releasing it as a single.

Wolflight will be released at the end of March, but the accompanying tour is not planned until autumn. Until then, there will be a few concerts: in mid-March in South America, at the end of May in Belgium and Luxembourg, and in June/July in Argentina, the USA and Germany. This gives Steve enough time to once again participate in recordings by other artists. These include the upcoming albums by his brother John Hackett, Steve’s new frontman Nad Sylvan, Chris Squire’s ‘buddy’ Billy Sherwood, and his ex-colleagues from the first Steve Hackett Band, Dik Cadbury and Pete Hicks!

At the end of July/beginning of August, Steve will be back on the road with Djabe for five concerts in Hungary, Slovakia and Croatia.
To mark the release of his new album and the 40th anniversary of his debut album Voyage Of The Acolyte, Steve Hackett will be touring extensively throughout Europe during September and October under the fitting tour title Acolyte To Wolflight with Genesis Revisited. New to the line-up is Flower Kings frontman and guitarist Roine Stolt, who will mainly be playing bass on this tour. This tour will also be documented in sound and vision – this time, Liverpool will be the venue!

Immediately afterwards, the tour will continue in North America until mid-December.

In the new year, Steve wants to tackle another rock album and take more time for it than he did with Wolflight, starting with the first recordings in January. Nevertheless, he is still willing to collaborate on other productions. Steve is always available for his extended circle of musician friends in Italy. Currently, Nik Comoglio & Riccardo Ruggeri from Syndone and, once again, Vincenzo Ricca with his The Rome Pro(G)ject have asked him to contribute to their new albums.

Extensive touring is also planned for 2017, as demand for the Genesis Revisited programme continues. So it comes as no surprise that Steve Hackett has given the now established successful concept an unambiguous tour motto: Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett! The focus is now on the 40th anniversary of the Genesis album Wind & Wuthering, the last one with Steve’s participation, as well as some new solo tracks. The tour kicks off at the end of January at the British Giants Of Rock Festival, before heading out to the Caribbean Sea for the third time on Cruise To The Edge. The band will then tour North America until the beginning of March.
Until the tour continues in Europe, frontman Nad Sylvan is recording his new album, on which Steve also features on four tracks.
