Steve Hackett – Recording Compendium, Part 11: 2018 – 2025
Part 11 deals with Steve’s “hyperactive” phase, which, in addition to numerous “Genesis Revisited” tours and Djabe collaborations, produced four rock albums with “At The Edge Of Light,” “Surrender Of Silence,” ‘The Circus And The Nightwhale’ and the follow-up work, four rock albums, an acoustic album, ‘Under A Mediterranean Sky’, and the “Rothery/Hackett” project.
Part 11: At The Edge Of Light / Under A Mediterranean Sky / Surrender Of Silence / The Circus And The Nightwhale/ “Rothery/Hackett” / “next album” | 2018 – 2025
Last update: 13/12/2025 | Overview | back to part 10

Without a new album in tow, Steve Hackett’s two-month Genesis Revisited, Solo Gems & GTR Tour de Force kicks off once again at sea in early February with the Cruise To The Edge spectacle, then takes the band through North, Central, and South America until the end of March, before concluding with two gigs in Tokyo.
After the tour, Steve and Roger will continue with long-overdue recording sessions for their next rock album.
At the beginning of June, Steve will be a special guest at a concert by the John Hackett Band, where he will accompany a track from 2011 that he has not been involved with before…

At the end of October, drummer Gary O’Toole, who had been an integral part of the Steve Hackett Band for 18 years, announced his departure for family reasons. This came as a shock to many fans.
After these busy months of the current year, Steve has earned himself a slightly lighter workload for the remaining weeks. Nevertheless, there will be a few guest appearances here too. He will be featured on the upcoming albums by Dave Kerzner’s In Continuum band project, UPF (United Progressive Fraternity), and, for the first time, by legend Alan Parsons.

With two performances by the Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio in mid-December at Trading Boundaries, the year is drawing to a close.

Steve’s focus in the new year is clearly on live performances. The successful “Genesis Revisited” concept will remain in place, but from this year onwards it will become more concrete, with complete albums being performed on stage to celebrate their anniversaries. However, Gary O’Toole’s departure has created a problem, as his successor, drummer Craig Blundell, who is known to Steve Wilson, is not yet available for the already booked “Cruise” gigs. This has led to a short-term collaboration with drummer Marco Minnemann in the first half of February, who already appears in the line-up of Cruise To The Edge and its offshoot The Blue Cruise with his projects The Sea Within and In Continuum.
Die Pause danach bis zur eigentlichen Tour nutzt Steves Frontmann Nad Sylvan, um sein nächstes Solo-Album aufzunehmen, auf welchem auch Steve bei einem Track zu hören sein wird.

Before continuing with concerts, Steve has time – in addition to his contribution to the Italian band Algebra – to contribute to both the upcoming album by his former keyboardist Nick Magnus and an Anthony Phillips tribute album by the band Rocking Horse Music Club.

In mid-July, Steve Hackett & Band will head to Italy for a few gigs as part of the Genesis Revisited Tour 2019. At the same time, his Hungarian friends from Djabe will also be in the country and will once again be in Sardinia, jamming together—this time without Steve—to create music for an album. However, at the end of July/beginning of August, Djabe & Steve Hackett have several joint performances scheduled in Hungary and Czechia, so they use the time between gigs to record Steve’s additional parts for the Sardinia sessions. The result is released on the album Back To Sardinia…

In the new year, Steve Hackett‘s Genesis Revisited Tour 2020: Selling England By The Pound Plus Spectral Mornings is set to continue due to high demand. First, North Americans will be treated to an encore at the end of February. But the encore turns into a setback when pandemic-related lockdowns are decided worldwide in March and concerts are no longer allowed. Thus, the current tour ends abruptly with the concert in Allentown on March 12! As a result, two (orchestral) concerts in Germany, the dates in Japan and Australia, as well as the annual performances with Djabe are canceled or postponed. Likewise, the new Hackett tour Genesis Revisited: Second’s Out + More, already announced for mid-September, falls victim to the lockdowns and is postponed.
Steve is using his months-long retreat to work on a new acoustic album… his first since Tribute 13 years ago! In addition to Roger King, several other guests are involved, which broadens the sound palette and provides variety. Except for the song House Of The Faun, which was already played live in 2016, and Lora, which was recorded and released in the same year, the tracks on the album titled Under A Mediterranean Sky are still unknown.

By the time the next fall/winter lockdown months roll around—when the Genesis Revisited: Second’s Out + More tour was supposed to take place—Steve Hackett will start working on another rock album with Roger King…

While working quietly on his next album, without the stress of touring, there is plenty of time in the new year for all kinds of collaborations, namely with an All Stars Pink Floyd tribute project, the band Nine Skies, with his sister-in-law and fellow musician Amanda Lehmann on her first solo album, with the band Treiyer, with Italian prog legends PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi), and another Italian musician named Francesco Tripodi…

Finally, Steve Hackett & Band will continue their Genesis Revisited: Seconds Out + More tour at the beginning of March, first through Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Poland until the middle of the month, and then through the USA from the beginning to the middle of May.
After a month-long break, the band will be touring New Zealand and Australia from mid to late June, followed by three gigs in Kawasaki, Japan, in July, and then another trip to Germany, Italy, and Malta until early August.
After a band gig at the Cropredy Festival in Banbury, England, Steve travels back to his friends in Hungary. The five-day mini-tour by Djabe & Steve Hackett reaches fans in Austria, Hungary, and Czechia. Some individual clips from individual concerts as well as the complete performance in Győr will be released later…

From the end of June to mid-July, Steve Hackett will be back on tour in Europe with his own band, performing Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty & Solo Highlights.

Steve Hackett is working flat out with Roger King on his next album, which is said to deal with unusually strong autobiographical themes. The studio work will be interrupted by a two-week stay in South America in August to delight fans there with Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty & Solo Highlights. The recordings for the new album The Circus And The Nightwhale have to be completed in September, as the band will be back on tour in October. With the exception of the final track, White Dove, which was already recorded in 2017 and released in Japan (see Part 10), twelve sometimes unusually short pieces were created here, which chronologically deal with Steve’s life.

Once the album recordings are complete, the band will embark on the final leg of their Genesis Revisited: Foxtrot at Fifty & Solo Highlights tour, which will take them across North America from early October to mid-November.

The new year begins with two acoustic trio gigs on January 21 and 22 at Trading Boundaries in Fletching. The performances there will be recorded, as have been several before, as the band wants to compile a live album of the concerts that have been held there annually since 2016. Most of the recordings are likely to be from this year, and some tracks have been supplemented with recordings from previous performances.

Shortly thereafter, Steve has performances with the “Hungarian Connection” coming up, which is unusual for this time of year! The Bodø Jazz Open Festival in Norway has invited Djabe & Steve Hackett. Since the band has the location at its disposal for three whole days, they decide to use the time there for jam sessions similar to those in Sardinia and to record them. The raw material was subsequently shaped by Tamás.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the concept album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, so the new tour motto is obvious: Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo! From July 2 to 20, Steve Hackett and his bandmates will first play indoor and outdoor gigs in Belgium, Holland, Denmark, and Germany.
With Djabe, he will only be playing one show this year, on August 8 in Budapest.
Steve Hackett and his band will spend almost the entire month of October on a UK tour featuring Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo. The finale at the Royal Albert Hall will be celebrated with guests Ray Wilson, Steve Rothery, John Hackett, and Amanda Lehmann and recorded for release.

Just in time for the release of Steve Hackett‘s live album Live Magic At Trading Boundaries, two Acoustic Trio concerts will once again take place in mid-January at the same location.
Until he goes on tour again in April, Steve is making a fresh start on another solo album at his new home in Twickenham. He is also continuing to work with Steve Rothery and his keyboardist Riccardo Romano on their joint album, which was not ready for its planned release in September last year. Steve is also featured on a single by a certain Robinson Hewes.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo tour in the spring cannot take place with drummer Craig Blundell. Steve Hackett relies on the recommendation of Jonas Reingold—the German ex-drummer of the Flower Kings, Felix Lehmann, steps in. The tour kicks off in early April on the Caribbean Sea with Cruise To The Edge and continues after a short break until mid-May on the European continent.
Work on recordings continues with Roger King until the band, including Craig Blundell, heads to Japan for a series of gigs in early July. After the trip, Steve reunites with Steve Rothery and Riccardo Romano to work on their joint album. Djabe & Steve Hackett will be touring Hungary and Croatia in late July/early August for three Freya Summer Shows.
Dazu kommt noch ein neuer Kontakt: die italienische Band Delta V arbeitet an einem neuen Album und holt Steve für einen Track dazu.

According to statements made by Steve Rothery in early August, the joint album with Steve Hackett is 85 percent complete and is finally set to be released next year. In the meantime, however, Steve Hackett and Roger King are busy recording sessions for their next solo album—by the end of August, they had already recorded almost 40 minutes of material. It will be the last album in collaboration with Roger King, who has already announced his retirement in 2026!
In addition, drummer and singer Nick D’Virgilio is revamping his 2008 Rewiring Genesis album with his interpretation of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, and is able to get Steve on board for some guitar overdubs.

In the first half of September, Steve Hackett will once again be performing Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo shows in Italy, which will again have to take place without Craig Blundell and with Felix Lehmann. After a short break, the band will then head back to North America from the beginning of October until the end of November. However, this very last leg of the tour will appropriately feature drummer Nick D’Virgilio. The Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo tour ends on November 22 in Portland, the last performance for keyboardist Roger King—25 years after his first live gig with Steve!
Anfang Dezember läd Mr. Hackett Steve Rothery und Riccardo Romano zu sich ein, um endlich die Aufnahmen für ihr gemeinsames Projekt abzuschließen.
