Steve Hackett – Recording Compendium, Part 6: 1990 – 1994

This part of the Steve Hackett Recording Compendium focuses on the comeback album Guitar Noir and the breakout album Blues With A Feeling.

Part 6: Guitar Noir / Blues With A Feeling | 1990 – 1994

Last update: 25/08/2025 | Overview | back to part 5 | on to part 7

1990

With the dawn of the 1990s, Steve Hackett began a new chapter after what had been a rather difficult decade for him. With his new manager Billy Budis, he now worked towards independence, both in terms of recording and releases. Together with the experts from Recording Architecture, Steve’s estate in Twickenham was converted into his own studio during the course of the year, which was aptly named ‘The Basement’ and saved him expensive studio rental costs.

For Steve’s support act on his ’88 tour, singer and musician Mae McKenna, he plays a few guitar tracks for her new album.

British private TV channel CITV invites Steve Hackett to appear on their Bedrock programme – a concert recording lasting just under an hour in their own studio in Nottingham – to play a current set with a band in front of an audience. For Steve, this means putting together a new band, as the last line-up of his band played their last gig six years ago. The only constant remains his brother John Hackett, and Billy Budis recommends ex-Charlie keyboardist (and most recently second man on the keys with Yes offshoot ABWH) Julian Colbeck. They are joined by former Clouds/Savoy Brown bassist Ian Ellis and Pendragon drummer Fudge Smith. The set list for the September recording includes Hackett classics such as Depth Charge, Wonderpatch, In The Heart Of The City and Theatre Of Sleep, as well as new material. The broadcast will take place in the beginning of the following year and a release is scheduled for later date…

In the same year, Steve also began collaborating with Scottish singer/songwriter Jim Diamond, who had a No. 1 hit in the 1980s with I Should Have Known Better and whom Steve met through his Rock Against Repatriation project. In addition to their own material, they plan to reinterpret ballads from the last few decades and release them as an album. Although Steve invested a lot of time in the project over the next few years, only one track from this period was ever released.

However, Steve Hackett spends most of his time in his studio with new team member Jerry Peal, producing new material, two of which will be included on an upcoming ‘Best Of’ compilation from his time with the Charisma label: in addition to a number inspired by his trip to Vienna and played on classical guitar, there is also a song that has been further developed from the 1986 track Don’t Fall (In Love With Me).

The release of Steve Hackett‘s live album Time Lapse – the first output under the new Kudos label – featuring excerpts from his 1990 concert in Nottingham and a concert from 1981, prompts Steve to finally go on tour with his own band again after nine years. A new rhythm section is sought for this purpose. The race is won by drummer Hugo Degenhardt and bassist Dave Ball, who join the band independently but already know each other from their recent collaboration with Phillip Boa’s Voodoo Club.

The new quartet tours North America from 14 August to 27 September. The bold set list mainly features new, unreleased material, some of which has not even been recorded in the studio: A Vampyre With A Healthy Appetite, Flight Of The Condor (Sierra Quemada), Etruscan Serenade (The Dealer), Depth Charge (Riding The Colossus), End Of Day (All Is Mended), Beja Flor (By Paved Fountain), Skye Boat Song, Lost In Your Eyes and The Stumble.

Many years later, a video recording of the performance at New York’s Bottom Line Club will be officially released as part of a strictly limited box set in Japan…

Originally put together just for the tour, the quartet worked so well for Steve that he didn’t want to break up the band straight away. Some new band tracks developed further on tour, and Steve now wants to record them with this exact line-up, which is what the autumn months will be used for. The recordings will complete Steve’s new album, which will be called Guitar Noir

1993

While the finished Guitar Noir album is eagerly awaiting its long-overdue release in May, Steve is already busy with new recordings. He is recording several tracks with classical guitar that were already tried out live in 1988, which were intended to be included on an upcoming acoustic album, but would ultimately be used as bonus tracks for a reissue of the 1988 album Momentum.

There are still a few concerts to play in Italy in July before Steve and the band will devote themselves to further recordings for his blues-inspired album Blues With A Feeling, which will also include the cover version of The Stumble, already played live. For the first time on a Hackett album, a horn section called The Kew Horns will also be featured on brass.

At the same time, Steve is working on songs for another rock album, but is also toying with the idea of a purely instrumental album.

From May to September, Steve plays several acoustic concerts in Europe and Venezuela with Julian Colbeck, sometimes as support for Marillion and IQ concerts or David Palmer’s orchestra shows. Richard Buckland joins the ‘Hackett clan’ as live sound engineer and production manager.

In between, he plays some guitar for 34-year-old Swiss-born Cristiano Prunas, who has lived in London since 1988 and plans to release an album in Italy next year. The song is reworked two years later with new guest vocals by Tanita Tikaram, among others, and re-released.

The set lists will once again include previously unreleased material. Of the recorded shows, the concert at the Teatro Metropolitan in Palermo will be the winner and will be released on CD (with a few additions from the gig in Rome the previous day).

On the way back, Steve tells Julian about an encounter with a fan who wanted Genesis albums signed but was unsure whether Steve would sign them. However, as Steve has no problem with his Genesis past, the idea of teaming up with other ‘old proggers’ to perform old Genesis songs on stage comes up. Not a bad idea in the wake of the successful release of the ‘Definitive Remaster Editions’ of the Genesis albums from 1970 to 1982 in the autumn of 1994…
