Steve Hackett – Recording Compendium, Part 8: 1999 – 2007

Part 8 of the compendium focuses on the ‘MAP Studios’ phase, during which two band albums and two acoustic albums were recorded, interspersed with extensive touring.

Part 8: To Watch The Storms / Metamorpheus / Wild Orchids / Tribute | Summer 1999 – 2007

Last Update: 11/09/2025 | Overview | back to part 7 | on to part 9

Steve Hackett wants to expand! His basement studio is becoming too small for more elaborate sessions. He is therefore planning to build a larger studio in a wing of the building near Crown Studios (Billy Budis’ Camino office and Kim Poor’s studio), but this will take quite some time. He continues to work on new demos for rock line-ups and an orchestral classical work in the ‘basement’.

His work is interrupted by a small guest appearance at the Classic Rock Society Awards Ceremony at the end of November, where he shares the stage with the band Jadis for encores and meets Peter Banks again, 27 years after the session for his first solo album.

2000

At the beginning of the new millennium, the focus remains on building the studio and working on new songs. Work on the Camino Records label is also intensified and the online shop’s web presence is further expanded. In addition, Steve feels that the time is ripe to finally play concerts with a band again. Keyboardist Roger King would be there this time. The drummer would be Gary O’Toole, also from Budis’ managed band Manuka. Roger recommends bassist Phil Mulford, who coincidentally had already worked with Gary.

In April, however, Steve cannot resist accepting the request of his former Marillion drummer Ian Mosley to participate in his solo project together with the multi-talented Ben Castle. Steve can be heard on three songs on the album Postmankind, which also features contributions from Ian’s Marillion colleagues Steve Rothery and Pete Trewavas.

The very inspiring encounter with saxophonist and flautist Ben Castle is finally the missing piece of the puzzle for Steve Hackett‘s next live line-up, for which two new tracks have already been prepared in demo form.

The rest of the year was likely spent building the studio and working on the planned archive releases Feedback (Studio), Live Archive, a DVD edition of Tokyo Tapes and the re-release of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

2001

Filmmaker Chris Ward asks Steve Hackett to contribute the music for the new 50-minute documentary Outwitting Hitler about the story of Holocaust survivor Marian Pretzel. As the deadline leaves no time for new compositions, Steve uses set pieces from the albums Defector, Guitar Noir and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, supplemented by previously unreleased early versions of his next classical project, which he has been working on since 1999.

But Steve Hackett is already busy with an upcoming surprise! From the end of June to the end of July, he will be touring South and Central America with his band! Keyboardist Roger King and drummer Gary O’Toole are set for the line-up, but joining them for this tour are ex-Spirit Of Django bassist Terry Gregory and an exceptional talent on wind instruments: Rob Townsend. The tour will start in Argentina and continue through Chile, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Panama and Costa Rica, concluding with three gigs in Mexico. In addition to Mechanical Bride and Serpentine Song, which were already played last year, the current set list includes four new intros and instrumentals: The Floating Seventh, Pollution, Slave Girls and Lucridus.

The fourth concert of the tour at the Coliseo Gimnasio in Buenos Aires is recorded for release in sound and vision, much to the delight of many fans.

The second half of the year is likely to be dominated by writing new songs for a new band album and recording his next classical project. Steve is also recording a new version of his classic Horizons with Ben Fenner for the British music magazine Total Guitar, which will also feature on the Hackett compilation Genesis Files.

In addition, there are preparations for upcoming acoustic trio concerts in the new year with brother John and, for the first time, Roger King.

2002

In mid-January, the trio will perform three concerts in Tokyo, followed by a concert in Budapest, which will be recorded in sound and vision for release. The set list offers an interesting cross-section of his acoustic output since his time with Genesis. With Syrinx (by Debussy), Little Cloud and C Min. Triplets, there is also some new material…

Steve is currently busy editing the recordings from Buenos Aires and Budapest, which will be mixed in 5.1 surround sound for the first time and are scheduled for release later this year, before the acoustic trio travels to Italy for five more concerts at the end of April.

Steve then accepts an invitation from American Sean Malone to record guitar solos for several tracks on the upcoming album by his band project, Guardian Knot. Among the guests on the album is drummer Bill Bruford.

After another band gig in Italy in mid-July, Steve returns home for a special performance. Just four days later, Steve Hackett will be back on stage with his acoustic trio for three dates in Italy. The rest of 2002 is likely to be reserved entirely for recording the band’s upcoming and long-overdue new album, with the exception of five more acoustic trio gigs in Italy in the autumn.

2003

The time has finally come in the new year! Recording for the follow-up to Darktown, which took place for the first time in Steve’s new MAP Studio, is now complete. Camino Records has found a worthy partner in the German prog label InsideOut Music, which reissued several Hackett albums last year, and the new album To Watch The Storms will now be released on a large scale in May. Before Steve Hackett goes on tour with his band after the summer, there is another special live event at the end of August in which he is involved. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Hard Rock Café in Japan, Steve and Roger have been invited to Tokyo for two concerts as part of an all-star band! Under the motto Guitar Wars, the two will share the stage with former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, former Racer X/Mr. Big guitarist Paul Gilbert, former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, former Extreme/Van Halen frontman Gary Cherone and Mike Szuter to perform a colourful programme…

The final concert in Budapest will be recorded and initially released as a limited audio version of the Live Archive series, before a DVD release is planned on a larger scale at the end of the year. In addition to a few set list changes, the brand new track If You Can’t Find Heaven, which will be included on the next album, is also documented here.

After the tour, Steve finally wants to complete his next classical project, which he started back in 1999 and excerpts of which were used in the 2001 TV documentary Outwitting Hitler. Without having to rent recording studios, he can now take his time in his own MAP Studio to record the remaining orchestral parts, which are being performed piece by piece by a small ensemble of strings and wind instruments put together especially for this purpose. Incidentally, part of the Underworld Orchestra is a certain Dick Driver – a former bandmate of Steve’s from his Quiet World days.

Until there are a few more acoustic trio performances in Germany in the summer, songwriting for his next band album is on the agenda. He has also been asked by ex-Spock’s Beard frontman Neal Morse to contribute a guitar solo to his next solo album.

From late September to late October, Steve Hackett will be touring North America again with his trio, plus a final gig in Mexico City. The time before and after that will be devoted to his upcoming band album.

2006

Steve is likely to be found at MAP Studios for most of the first half of the new year. Work on the new album is interrupted when his brother John invites him to be a guest at one of the first gigs of the John Hackett Band as part of a Genesis convention. Among other things, he also accompanies another John Hackett track for the first time…

Anyone expecting a tour announcement to accompany the album release in September will be disappointed, as Hackett’s home is undergoing intense turmoil, unnoticed by the public. Steve’s partner Kim and manager Billy Budis are no longer just sharing the premises of Crown Studios, with the result that the couple, who met 31 years ago and married 25 years ago, are separating! Steve is holing up with Roger King at MAP Studios to work on an album for classical guitar.

2007

Despite personal complications, the album Tribute is recorded in the new year, which, in addition to two of his own compositions, contains only Steve’s interpretations of his favourite classics from the world of classical guitar. It will not be released until the following year as the last release from Camino Records.

However, Steve and Kim’s impending divorce on 18 May 2007 will not solve all their problems, as there is also a business partnership with both Kim and Billy that is coming to a dramatic head.
