Steve Hackett – Recording Compendium, Part 9: 2007 – 2011

Part 9 of the Steve Hackett Recording Compendium covers the crisis-ridden period following his separation from his wife and manager, during which he released the two solo albums as well as the Squackett album with Chris Squire.

Part 9: Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth / Squackett / Beyond The Shrouded Horizon | 2007 – 2011

Last update: 22/11/2025 | Overview | back to part 8 | on to part 10

2007

The separation from his partner Kim Poor and manager Billy Budis plunges Steve Hackett into a deep crisis. He finds support in his new partner Joanna ‘Jo’ Lehmann, whom he met in the early 1990s and with whom he has been engaged in a creative exchange ever since. Steve leaves his home and initially finds shelter in a log cabin in Tilford Woods. Working at MAP Studios becomes increasingly difficult for him, as the premises and equipment officially belong to the joint ‘company’. Recordings that have already begun have to be put on hold until court decisions have been made. Steve and Jo begin working on new material together and bring Roger King on board for the recording.

In April, Steve moves into a new flat on his own. Kim’s divorce proceedings in May and further legal disputes regarding his joint business relationships with Kim and Billy take up a lot of his time, effectively paralysing him as an artist until the final settlements. Nevertheless, new music emerges in the form of the song Fire On The Moon. During this time, he establishes close contact with Yes bassist Chris Squire, who invites him to participate in the recording of his second solo album – a Christmas album – in September and October.

2008

In the new year, Steve Hackett has to reposition himself despite ongoing disputes with his former partners. With Roger King, Steve wants to set up a home studio in his living room in his new flat so that he can work independently of MAP Studios. From now on, he also has to take care of contacts and management tasks himself. Unexpectedly, the eldest son of his former bandmate Phil Collins, Simon Collins, contacts Steve to ask him to contribute to his upcoming solo album.

Steve Hackett begins recording a new solo album with his closest creative partner Roger King in his small ‘Living Room’ studio in Twickenham. Chris Squire is also set to contribute to the album. Parallel to the solo work, however, the idea arises to start a separate project by Steve and Chris, for which the first joint recordings are also made.

Steve and John Hackett accept an invitation from the Italian Genesis fan club Dusk to play a live set at a convention in Italy in September. There he meets the people from the Blue Sky Agency, who would like to invite Steve and his band to Italy for a few concerts next year. These would be Steve’s first band concerts after a break of almost five years!

2009

With his commitment to a mini-tour in Italy, Steve Hackett has to get his band back together again. Except for Terry Gregory, everyone is back on board. To the surprise of many, bassist and stick player Nick Beggs, none other than the former teen heartthrob of Kajagoogoo in the 80s, is joining the band. Interrupted only by a gig with Djabe, rehearsals for the upcoming concerts are likely to be the focus at the beginning of 2009. The band will then head to Italy in mid-March for four concerts. With Hackett’s Fire On The Moon and the track Storm Chaser from the sessions with Chris Squire, concert-goers will be treated to brand new material.

In addition to two acoustic trio gigs at the end of March for the Hackett event organised by the German Genesis fan club and another guest appearance in May with Djabe in Holland, the spring is mainly reserved for further ‘Living Room’ sessions, which will now also feature newcomer Nick Beggs. Eight tracks are now set to feature on the planned album with the apt title Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth, which will initially be available exclusively at upcoming concerts and on Steve’s new website hackettsongs.com on the label Wolfwork Records, newly initiated by Steve.

Further court dates are pending before the new album can be released on Steve’s own label. But a tour is possible and is planned for the autumn. Until then, further recordings for the joint project with Chris Squire are underway, and Steve has several festival appearances to complete in June and July, both with his own band and with Djabe. At the Hackett shows in Las Palmas and Lugano, bassist Dik Cadbury, who was an integral part of Steve’s first solo band from 1978 to 1980, surprisingly steps in for Nick Beggs, who is unable to attend! The organiser of the Italian fan club Dusk uses the last festival dates of the summer in Italy to convince Steve to participate in the upcoming album of his band Algebra.

2010

In the first few months of the new year, Steve Hackett and Chris Squire work intensively on their joint album. The project name Squackett, jokingly suggested by Squire in an interview, is adopted for the duo, which is actually a trio with Roger King. The drummer on the album, entitled A Life Within A Day, is Jeremy Stacey, who also played on Squire’s Swiss Choir album three years ago. However, it will be quite some time before the album is released, as the main protagonists are currently focusing on their main projects.

The Darkness In A Man’s Heart, a new track that turns out to be Nick Beggs’ solo, sneaks into the set list. The concert at the River To River Festival in New York City is recorded, and parts of it are used for the planned live album Live Rails, which also includes excerpts from last year’s concerts in Paris and London.

Steve Hackett will be in Switzerland for a gig in September with his Acoustic Trio. Otherwise, he is likely to be working on new material with Roger in the ‘Living Room’ until November. From mid-November, he will be touring with his band in his home country for a good two weeks. With Prairie Angel, a brand new track makes it into the set list. The gig at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire features guests John Wetton and Steven Wilson and is documented in sound and vision. Only here does he play the Dylan classic All Along The Watchtower together with Wetton.
