Part 5: No Jacket Required | 1984 - 1987

Last update: 25 May 2023

1984

After the Mama Tour with Genesis and his surprise success with the solo single Against All Odds, Phil Collins sits in on the drums for a "one off" project in March. Singer & guitarist Dave Edmunds has the job of putting together a "fitting" soundtrack for the 50s teenybopper smash Porky's Revenge! and curiously records a cover version of a song from the 50s with him, Paul Martinez and Robert Plant (who is currently recycling old numbers with his All Star fun project The Honeydrippers) under the band name The Crawling King Snakes - one of Plant's ex-bands from the 60s.

After that, Phil Collins is off to Montserrat in the Caribbean in the spring, where he will produce most of his friend Eric Clapton's new album at AIR Studios there and also contribute some drums, percussion and backing vocals.

Back home, Phil starts thinking about his next solo album. But his skills as a producer and instrumentalist are also in demand again. After Phil had already worked with the Phenix Horns, the brass section of Earth, Wind & Fire, their singer and frontman Philip Bailey now wants to record his third album under Collins' leadership. Even a duet between the two is being written and will become a world hit for both of them. This is the first time Phil Collins has worked with the sought-after bassist Nathan East, which should happen more often in the future...

While the new album is being released, Phil Collins and his "Hot Tub Club" band are already busy rehearsing for the upcoming The No Jacket Required Tour, which will keep him busy for the next six months. After the tour there is a big live finale of a special kind for Phil. As a boost to the successful Band Aid benefit project, Live Aid will take place on 13 July 1985 with parallel concerts worldwide. Especially the concerts in London's Wembley Stadium and in the John F. Kennedy Arena in Philadelphia with performances by numerous mega stars are broadcast live on TV worldwide.
