It is strange, like the 1980 show all mixed up and with Misunderstanding thrown in. And headed '1988/1990'.
Disc 3/4, the 1984 Mama tour looks like it could be the Birmingham video with Alien removed.
You are right, it's probably directly taken from the Birmingham video.
Still can't figure the last two discs. Unless In The Cage and Misunderstanding are swapped. But still, odd thing to throw one track in. Looks like a bit of KBFH broadcasts and Lyceum tapes mixed together.
Thanks
Is there detailed information which shows were used? 1/2 should be Berlin 1987, 5/6 Hanover 1994 (Collins).
Judging by the tracklist:
Discs 1-2 could also be Wembley (Live In The City Of Light bootleg).
Discs 3-4 should be the "Westwood Superstar" series bootleg (most tracks from Los Angeles, 1984).
Discs 5-6 should be Hannover 1994.
Discs 7-8 should be the Lyceum concerts, although the tracklist is very odd.
I had to go digging, but I remember posting previously about a site that links to many songs that sample Genesis. I found it: https://www.whosampled.com/Genesis/
Great website.
The only thing is that it contains a lot of unconfirmed samples (I think that's the website Backdrifter was referring to in the DWTML sample).
Nonetheless, it's very exhaustive.
Was browsing a bit and I found a few interesting stuff:
The "Mama" drum loop used by Industrial Electro pioneer Wumpscut
I'm officially confused. I've seen different sources saying there are samples "at 00.07, 00.15 and throughout" and that the sample occurs at 01.30. I can't hear either the alleged samples or the chord progression, which I've not seen referred to anywhere. I didn't know the track but quite like it as I have other stuff of theirs. Very nice horn section.
I think the chord progression is pretty obvious (C#m - G#m - AMaj7), even the rhythm of the progression is basically the same, it's just missing the melody on top of it.
At 7:30 in this video it's quite well demonstrated, although it could be a re-recording of the chord progression?
So I admit to being completely clueless about these styles of music. It’s easy to hear Firth of Fifth in the one song. Where is DWTMK sampled in the other song? Is it the drums?
The chord progression throughout the tune is taken from DWTMK.
Among the most famous:
OutKast (yes, them!) sampling Dancing with the Moonlit Knight
Prodigy (the rapper, not the band) sampling Firth of Fifth in a song called Genesis!
I think Enigma sampled some Genesis beats.
I really like this song. But, as for some other tunes on Both Sides, I can't stop thinking how much better it would have turned out if he decided to have a few session musicians around during the recording sessions. It would have improved the arrangement. This song CALLS for Leland or Nathan to add some great bass lines, or Daryl to add a nice atmospheric solo.
Would have loved to hear how this song would have sounded in a live scenario to get the idea.

Well, I think he's making a judgment of artistic merit there, and anyone can (and should) make such a judgment. Pop and rock musicians do often make facile and concocted music, some more so than others. And sometimes they make great music. This is one of the ways that we judge whether we like a song or not. Does it sound real? Does it sound heartfelt? Agree with him or not, Waters is simply saying that to him Collins writes on a low artistic level. I don't entirely agree that Collins isn't genuine but I do feel that he isn't / wasn't artistically capable of anything truly revealing and interesting. He got close a few times (e.g. Take me Home). There's other mainstream pop/rock stars of the 80s I'd put quite high above him artistically (e.g. Peter Gabriel)
In my opinion not being able to write anything revealing (and what we perceive as interesting) does not interfere with personal artistic value. Or better: not everything that is uninteresting or not revealing is of low artistic level. Somebody might judge artistic value as musicianship, production, musical capacity, arrangement. Somebody else will use other parameters, and that's perfectly fine.
E.g.: Against All Odds is nothing revealing or "artsy" but it contains a great chord progression, some harmonic surprises, a great build-up, and it's well produced. I like it because of those reasons. Somebody else might not like it because to them it might feel derivative or for them it lacks of creativity or it feels unimaginative. And that is fine, it just really depends on one own history with music listening. And therefore; since it's purely subjective at the end of the day, I just feel our views on the artistry of a songwriter or a musician are personal.
I'm kind of realizing we are probably saying the same things but from two different angles.
I actually don't understand what he means by "it's an act" in that context. Somebody who writes songs is de facto a songwriter, lyrical content aside.
Regarding the "rock'n'roller" I don't think he ever even wanted to be one or pretended to be one.
If he means that somehow his persona was fabricated and his songs concocted to be appealing, well, that's not for him (or anybody else for that matter) to judge and it's overall quite a shallow and superficial thing to say considering his overall career.
As a fan, I have always found his solo career to just have happened at the right time for it to be incredibly successful.
But maybe I misunderstood his words.
Great song. Fantastic energy. A great concert opener.
I was always intrigued by the rumours of this song being played during the IT tour. Although it's very likely somebody confused the ending of Los Endos with Squonk.
Very good indeed. I think I read somewhere this may have had a working title of Bonzo from its drumming inspiration.
It is mainly from Rutherford, who wrote the "heavier" section. Even in his memoir he likened it to Kashmir.
Elder - Innate Passage
Great prog album.
My tag would suggest what do I think of this song.
Really like this one. It's very well structured and I love how balanced (without feeling over-produced) the dark-side mix is.
It works incredibly well in a live setting as well.
Tonight: Prawns in panko with lemon and a Godello.
Cold Blood - Thriller
Completely forgot about this great album. Lydia Pense killing it on vocals. I think they might still be around!
I've been given the wrong change three times in a row this morning, and it's only 9 a.m.
I don't want report too much, but on my phone looking for genesis live 14 oct 86, Genesis live 15 Oct 86 and Genesis live 16 Oct 86, there are the complete concerts with PC song intros!
I've listened to the 14th and 16th and they are not it.
That leaves us with the 13th as only possibility.
The opening song being from the previous record might have started with Squonk during the W&W tour.
True that! Thanks for the correction.
Nothing 'new', but Don't Break This Rhythm (same version as on Floatsam and Jetsam) has been released for subscribers only.
It has been put on Bandcamp as it has been referenced in the Olive Tree deep dive video.
