Incidentally, I emailed Steve Hackett's website, to point out the new location of the TIOA forum, Jo has replied to say it will be amended on the links page. If anyone knows of other sites linking to TIOA, maybe you'd like to inform them.

Regardless, for most people, the stereo remixes are what matters. The whole catalogue in surround is a huge achievement, but not at the expense of lousy stereo mixes.

For quite a while, Phil didn't rate this album that highly. I think his feelings were coloured by the fact that the only single from the album to achieve success was a cover version. The first single, Thru These Walls, was not a big hit (hardly surprising, given the subject matter and the rather lazy use of "that" drum fill which he admitted to biographer Johnny Waller in the eighties was a "mistake"). Also the cynicism of lyrics such as I Cannot Believe It's True (a scathing attack on his wife who was increasingly asking for more money in the divorce settlement) and It Don't Matter To Me as well as the unbridled anger of I Don't Care Anymore and Do You Know, Do You Care might be a tad embarrassing to him now.

Revisiting the album for the remix he recognised he'd been "a bit harsh" in his assessment. There's some beautiful work here. Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away could be a Paul McCartney song and then there's the tribute to the Buddy Rich big band sound with The Westside. The uptempo numbers may be treading the same ground as some of the tunes on Face Value but there's a brightness to them that's hard to ignore. Overall, I think the album is a perfect companion piece to Face Value.

    His best album, IMO.

One Member went on to be in The Maisonettes, big hit with Heartbreak Avenue (Or was it Heartache?) - City Boy had a big hit with 5705. The said members brother (Twin?) was an actor and appeared in UK soap Crossroads, and that is the end of the pointless trivia!

Actually the 2007 versions were remixes, not remasters! - I don‘t know how often I‘ve tried to explain that this is a huge difference, although Nick Davis did what he could to make it not too obvious.

However, some albums benefitted largely on getting revised from scratch by going back to the original multitrack recordings, so they became very different beasts, almost incomparable to the old stereo mixes. Which was no surprise, since it‘s virtually impossible to re-create a mix in every detail. Especially the return signals from outboard effects like reverb have never been recorded on the multitracks, so it‘s more or less try and error to get these right.

Having said that, I always thought it was a very bad idea to abandon the old stereo mixes completely, as they are part of the band’s history (and most of them sound fairly good, especially from the DER series).

Agreed. A true definitive release would be a 2 disc set, the 2007 remix AND the 1994 remaster. For me, the only 2007 that is best is Foxtrot, because the original mix was truly dull in every sense of the word. As for worst version: THe original CD release (Mastered by Sanyo) of Wind..... bad beyond belief!

Hey Paul. I'm seeing how I can set it up, as HTTrack is configured a bit differently than creating your own html pages and saving each page in individual folders. I see just an index page but when I use that page locally on my harddrive the pages on the forum load up. I will have to see how it uploads to ftp, and if it works correctly. Otherwise, I could dropbox it and have others download the folder at their leisure.

I also backed up the old forum a few days before it closed, and it seemed to work OK off-line. HOWEVER, my old PC has died, typing this on my new one, but I don't think it was a hard-disc crash, I think it's a power supply issue internally. Due to other issues at present, (mum's in hospital) I haven't had time to dig into it, but if the disc is OK, I will recover the data one way or another. I'll let you know when I do.
