They should have gone for a double

That's an interesting idea. The 9 album tracks plus the 5 outtakes add up to about 71 minutes -- probably a song or two short of a double, at least by Genesis standards. And, personally, I can't see "Naminanu," "Submarine" or "Me & Virgil" as anything but outtakes (although I do like "Naminanu").

Actually, as I understand it, the fadeout on "Submarine" on ARCHIVE 2 was due to deterioration of the masters, but the fadeout on "It's Yourself" was simply due to an "artistic" decision on the part of the band. So, on the latter... no, don't let them off!!

Also, as I understand it, the later box set does include the original version of "Submarine," but leaves the same fadeout on "It's Yourself" -- while also (pointlessly, IMO) adding an additional verse to it from an early demo version.

And, in case you missed it, the faded version of "Submarine" on ARCHIVE 2 has some parts repeated, thus giving an "edited" version that's longer than the original.

BTW, something HBTS/SHBTS and Domino have in common, besides being 2-part pieces: The two parts of each one appeared on singles separately from each other.

    - HBTS was a single.

    - SHBTS was the B-side to That's All.

    - In The Glow Of The Night was the B-side to Tonight, Tonight, Tonight.

    - The Last Domino was the B-side to Invisible Touch.

In retrospect, it strikes me as odd for SHBTS and The Last Domino to appear on any record out of context without their respective "first" parts. They don't really sound like "standalone" tracks.

On the original vinyl of PRIVATE PARTS & PIECES II: BACK TO THE PAVILION, Side 1 is called "N.O.R. Side" and Side 2 is called "S.O.R. Side". I recently came across something (in an interview that I can't find now) that said this was some kind of joke on the phrase "A.O.R." but didn't explain it further.

Actually... I had always assumed it meant "North of Record" and "South of Record"!

Never understood why they separated HBTS on the record into two parts.

Now there's a question... why is HBTS/SHBTS two tracks on the record & CD, but Domino is only one track?

The CD track division between HBTS/SHBTS always seemed wrong to me as well. It happens at a seemingly random point during the quiet interlude in the middle. I would think it should happen as the drums for SHBTS come in.

In the poll I picked Mama & Just A Job To Do. I guess HBTS/SHBTS would be my third choice, but I would have had to pick just one of them.

As for IGGB... well, I've probably made my feelings about that track clear by now.

Ant has made a lot of albums, that's for sure. Which one is your favorite? And what are your favorite tracks on it?

Based on what I recall seeing on the old message board, THE GEESE AND THE GHOST seems to be his most popular album; but I personally don't consider it his best.

I've heard the majority of Ant's output*, and my favorite of his albums is NEW ENGLAND.

My favorite tracks on it are "Sunrise & Sea Monsters" and "Unheard Cry" (possibly the most heartbreaking song ever to come out of Genesis-world, and one of Ant's better vocals outside of INVISIBLE MEN).

    * I have heard 32 of Ant's 35 albums (as listed in the discography at his website), and I currently own 26.

    Thoughts after the first listen:

Throughout the first several tracks not much really grabbed me, and I felt rather disappointed. But then as the album progressed it started subtly getting better. I gradually got more and more glad that I'd bought it.

I'll have to get more acquainted with the individual tracks, but off the top I recall that "Winter Lights" brought to mind parts of TWELVE (in a good way), and "Mouse Trip" gave me a laugh.

I noticed that Ant made a point to mention that "Life Story" (the 10-minute closer) had no overdubs. That seemed odd, as the other tracks generally don't sound like they have overdubs (with the obvious exception of "Sunset Riverbank"). "Life Story" didn't sound like it had any either, until well into the second half.

Overall, this is a fine Ant album. Being a double, it's natural to compare it to FIELD DAY; but, really, I don't find much comparison between the two albums. One's not better than the other; they're just different.

PS: "Life Story" is incorrectly listed on Ant's site as "Life Road."

Update: Listened a second time (playing the "surround sound" disc for my wife on the DVD player, with just regular stereo speakers) and I like it better already (even the tracks at the beginning)!

On the W&W 40th tour Hackett was introducing it with a speech saying we might be surprised to learn Collins wrote the lyric, "before he started writing songs about ex-wives".

    I guess Steve would know!

On a slightly unrelated note, I read somewhere that John Hackett wrote the verses of Get 'Em Out by Friday. Is this true?

No, he's said to have contributed to the quiet instrumental break in the middle of the song.

Linking them worked well on the tour but on the record it would've resulted in a ridiculously long side and a badly lop-sided album overall.

    Bingo.

As it happens, DUKE represents the most music Genesis ever crammed onto a single LP: 55 minutes. (BTW, side 2 of SELLING, at over 28-1/2 minutes, is their longest LP side overall.) The "Duke Suite" would have actually fit on one vinyl side (at "only" about 28 minutes); but the album is definitely better as it is -- a perfectly sequenced album, IMHO.

BTW, I chose "Duke Suite" over "Supper's Ready", but it was a close call.

    Pigeons - Mike

Inside and Out - We're told that this is Phil, but I originally heard it was Mike. I'm probably wrong, but I still think it sounds much more like his style.

The Day the Light Went Out, Evidence of Autumn - These are Tony solo compositions, so the lyric writer isn't in question.

Open Door - This is a Mike solo composition, so...

    You Might Recall - Tony

Down and Out - I think Mike.

Ballad of Big - I think Phil.

No Reply At All - Mike.

Taking It All Too Hard - I think Mike.

It's Gonna Get Better - I think Phil.

Throwing It All Away - Mike.

    Never A Time - Mike.

Hold On My Heart - Phil.

Way Of The World - Mike.
