Part 7: Both Sides | 1992 - 1995

Last Update: 01 October 2023
Overview | back to part 6 | on to part 8

1984

After the last leg of Genesis' We Can't Dance tour (which would be his last with the band for the time being), Phil Collins will again have time for solo songs - an affair with an old childhood friend gives him plenty of lyrics again - and collaborations from mid-November. Probably during this time, he will take over backing vocals and percussion on four songs by Bruce Hornsby, play drums on four numbers by his old friend and band mate in Flaming Youth, Ronnie Caryl, and write a song especially for David Crosby.

1993

In the first half of the new year, Phil is exclusively busy with his upcoming solo album, for which he is working on a total of 18 songs (including a cover song). He plans to record everything himself, for which he is already preparing fully developed arrangements with all kinds of sample sounds for his home demos, which would later only be refined with real drums in the studio. Some of these original demos will also be released later.

After the recordings, Phil distracts himself in Sydney, Australia, where he gets to star in the filming of the movie Frauds. The rest of the year he is busy with promotional activities for his new solo album. During this time Phil decides to leave his band Genesis, but only lets manager Tony Smith know.

1994

The new year is all about a very extensive world tour, but before that Phil has time to record the drums for three songs on the upcoming Martin Page album in Los Angeles.

In the weeks leading up to the start of the tour, the Service Men's Club in Chiddingfold, England, is occupied for rehearsing, because there are some new faces in the band (which this time calls itself "The Indescribable Din"), including bassist Nathan East for the first time and drummer Ricky Lawson, who replaces Chester Thompson after 17 years together. The rehearsals are documented in the video special A Closer Look, which will be available for purchase for charity on the Both Sides Of The World tour. It includes clips of the songs I Missed Again, Hang In Long Enough, Don't Lose My Number, In The Air Tonight and We Wait And We Wonder, among others. The tour starts on 1 April in Europe, where they will be on the road until early May, followed by Mexico, USA and Canada from mid-May to early August, before heading back to Europe after a three-week break in September and the first half of October, and after a five-week break from late November to mid-December, it's the UK's turn. After live album and video was already released from Phil's last tour in 1990, there are only a few official releases from this tour..

After a three-week break from touring in the summer of '94, Phil and his band are guests on the legendary MTV Unplugged series at the end of August, for whose live performance in the London TV studio the songs played are rearranged to be suitable for acoustics. From the one-hour broadcast, only two songs will officially end up on Collins releases..

1995

After a 3-month break, the tour activities surprisingly go into another round in the new year. Now under the tour motto Far Side Of The World, from mid-March to mid-May, the troupe will rattle through numerous countries that are often left out of tours: South Africa, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Peru, China, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines..

Some of the concerts from this final leg of the tour were broadcast live by TV channels, excerpts of which would be streamed on the official Phil Collins fan club website for a while 15 years later. The tracks from Live In Bankok are from 27.03.1995 from the Thai Army Stadium, a concert that interestingly took place without guitarist Daryl Stuermer: Don't Lose My Number, I Wish It Would Rain Down, A Groovy Kind Of Love, Both Sides Of The Story, Hang In Long Enough, Easy Lover, Something Happened On The Way To Heaven, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Two Hearts, Against All Odds. Live In Peru contains more tracks from the concert at the Estadio Nacional in Lima on 25.04.1995: I Don't Care Anymore, Everyday, Another Day In Paradise, One More Night, We Wait And We Wonder, In The Air Tonight, Find A Way To My Heart, Only You Know And I Know, Sussudio, You Can't Hurry Love, Take Me Home.

During the tour-free period of the year, Phil also curiously sings a new rendition of one of his own songs by Fourplay, the jazz/fusion band of his current touring bassist Nathan East

While fans already assume that Phil Collins is back in the studio with Genesis after the end of the tour, this end of the tour is in many ways also the finale of a great chapter. During the past months, not only did his marriage to Jill Tavelman, which had been in tatters since 1992, finally break up, but Phil also fell in love with a young Swiss woman named Orianne Cevey, with whom he wants to start a new chapter immediately after the tour in Switzerland. This step also confirms his decision to leave Genesis, which he had already made in 1993, and which he now wants to announce personally to his band members...
