^ I just listened to Shadow and found it on the whole quite dull. The title track is a bit like a less-good KT Tunstall (who I like a lot) so there were nice touches. The best of the four for me by some way was Spiral which was nicely atmospheric. The other two were like breath on glass, fading as I was listening.

I'd agree with that, Shadow is good, and spiral is excellent, the bass really makes it work

I think the British do a great job of creating believable and relatable characters. Less glamorous actors and more depth.

If you really want to mine that shaft, and you can find it on a streaming service, may I suggest 60/70's TV series, Public Eye. About a very small time private enquiry agent, only 5 episodes of the first 3 series (1965/66/68) exist, as it was videotaped, not filmed, and at £200 a reel, about half the price of a typical car back then, the TV company reused the tapes! '68 ended with the main character, Frank Marker, being jailed (Not "The jailed" ^^) for handling stolen goods, having been fitted up by his client who used him for their own ends. (In this programme, it often does not end well.) The first full available series, 1969, sees him come out of prison and get himself back on his feet, both it and the '71 series are highlights, but there were 2 more, 73 and 75.

No guns, no car (he hires one if he needs one), it's a real variation on the usual private 'tec theme.

so unless I name a specific zoo, I should say I’m going to zoo. Unless I specify which concert I’m attending, I say I’m going to concert? Sounds mega awkward!!!

You just get used to it. Don't expect logic in the English language, it's evolved over centuries, often without even being written down.

The pronunciation of "cough" and "bough" would be an example of how bizarre it gets, though frankly, the way you say "Cholmondeley" (a village and castle about 10 miles from me) takes some beating! :)

The dreadful cover instantly goes into competition with Sylvan's laughable Spiritus Mundi.

Admittedly I have no interest in hearing this album but as always I stand to have my prejudices challenged.

Indeed, it's not a good cover, BUT, as G64 (as his friends call him!) says, she has a great voice, PLUS she writes really good songs. Well, so far she has. I have her 4 track EP, Shadow, from 2010, and it's excellent. (In fact, better than her brother-in-laws efforts in more recent times.) If you'd like to hear it, I'm sure that can be arranged. I think they are all on Youtube anyway.

Just ordered the CD, first 200 copies signed!

It might have been "nice", but I think the time for that is past. I think the members need to see that this isn't just becoming a wild west town, with no law and no-one taking any notice of offenders.

I personally think FFS is pretty much the nail on the head. I'm not sure why there is so much reluctance to eject repeat offenders. The old forum was "3 strikes and your gone", less for a major offence. I even had one guy leave in a huff as he knew he was about to be pushed. I forget what he called me, but it wasn't as bad as the name used by the "major offence" guy. Sad thing is, it was his only offence in over 10000 posts and I'd have given him a warning, but someone else pushed his button before I could act.

So, you see, I believe there is a time for leniency, but not for repeat offenders. Leopards don't change their spots. Old English saying. Feel free to use it! 8)

    Gentlemen, ladies: manners, please!

Is that it? Your response to a totally unacceptable post by a repeat offender? "Manners, please!" No wonder this place is going to the dogs, there is no effective moderation taking place here at all. You've had the same person make comments about Nazi Germany being alive and well, You've belittled someone who criticized his post about Wuppertal (The poster was from Dresden. Do you not think he was well aware of the comments you made about the Jordan river, he probably knows them better than you. I've known him for over 10 years and found him to be a worthy member and good judge of right and wrong).

We had the SCD fiasco drag on for nearly 2 years due to gutless moderation, with the majority of forum members sick to the back teeth of his attitude and posturing. Are we to have the same again?

Grow some bloody teeth and a backbone, before we all move on. FFS!

When you say "remastered", do you mean Remixed? There are the original CD's from the 80's, many versions of them, many very poor (best example I know of, W&W with "mastered by Sanyo" in the disc clamping area. Generally, these are a mixed bag, some good, some, as I say, very bad.

Then there are the 1994 Remasters, Labelled "Definitive Edition Remaster" on the CD case rear, which are generally the best versions, having had the hiss removal and other such enhancements.

Then there are the "2008 Digital Remaster and Stereo Mix" as stated in the front sidestrip. This involves going back to the original multitrack masters, and recreating the stereo mix, which has the potential to do a great job, but also carries the issues that some effects are added at this point, which in the case of early albums might have involved the use of old tech (echo springs, for example) which studios no longer have. So the remix engineer has to try and recreate the effect, not always successfully. But also, as you say, the engineer sometimes goes over the top with compression etc. I suspect these are what you are referring to.

You should still be able to get the versions you want via Ebay, I could even rip some if you want to compare.

"With drummer Phil Collins assuming the role of vocalist, the trio enjoyed their first major hit single with 'Follow You Follow Me', in 1978. "

Completely ignoring the existence of Steve. Nothing new, I guess.

I never heard the album but I went to see GTR perform in London. It was ok-ish, I think but pretty unmemorable.

One thing I do remember was vocalist Max Bacon at the end of the gig acknowledging the applause and excitedly saying "GTR won't be a one-album wonder, we're going to carry on going for YEARS!" at which point I swear I saw the Steves grimace through their rictus grins.

My next memory of Max B was his being an unsuccessful contestant in A Song For Europe, the UK's televised show deciding that year's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. I didn't know about his New Faces appearance or that the show was even still going in the 80s. I hope his pub did ok.

Re the "one album wonder" quote, he says a similar thing on the live album which comes with the reissue.

I didn't know about the Song for Europe bid, but here's Max on the following weeks New Faces, so I guess he won the vote for the first appearance:

I quite like it. Certainly, the arrangements and production could have been better, and the initial CD release sounded awful, far too strident and shrill. The re-issue improves matters a bit, but it's still a bit tiring.

Best tracks: The single, When the heart....., The Hunter, Jekyll & Hyde, and the closing trio, Toe the line/Hackett to Bits/Imagining. The vocalist, Max Bacon, comes from somewhere around Cuddington, near Northwich, Cheshire, so not far from me. I had a friend back then who knew him. I believe he ended up as a pub landlord, but not before appearing on "New Faces" (Like X-factor for the 1980's) as a NEW act, and singing When the heart..........! What a laugh.

I've been watching a late 50's/early 60's series called "One Step Beyond" on Talking Pictures TV lately. It's a bit like the Twilight Zone, except this series is claimed to be based on actual events.

Last night's episode was called "The Vision". It recounts the tale of a vision in the skies over Europe during WW1, November 14th, 1915 to be precise. Curiousity got the better of me, as I suspected this to be the famous "Angel on Mons" incident. Sure enough, this is the event that inspired Steve Hackett's instrumental of the same name.

Sadly, Talking Pictures TV don't to on-demand, and given that there are about 96 episodes, even if they start again after completing them, you'd have to wait about 3 years for it to be re-transmitted. Fortunately, it's on Youtube, officially it seems:

They have a campaign bus?! :D

Buzz Aldrin had a bit of a reputation as a lively, rather volatile character and I like the story (apocryphal or not) that at some event one of these doubters went up to him and said, be honest now you didn't really go to the moon did you? Whereupon by way of answer Aldrin just decked him.

    It WAS a MINI-bus! :)

Yes, I've heard that Buzz Aldrin story too. Can't be sure, but I think I heard him confirm it after being asked on a chat show.

Yes, some of the programme was filmed in Inverness, then they followed their "campaign" bus to Perth.

If they understood the principles, they'd realise that, if your eyes are above the ground, and a ship sails away, given powerful binoculars/telescope, it would never disappear. I believe this was the first clue to the scientists way back that the Earth may NOT be flat. Talk about adding 2 and 2 and getting 5!

It makes your realise how truly amazing the fantastic minds of people from the past like Galileo, Faraday, and my all time hero (The greatest Brit, never mind what the BBC polls some years back concluded), Sir Isaac Newton, really were. Now THERE was a mind!

I also have a large cassette collection, though any albums I really value have since been repurchased in CD format.

Nonetheless, if I browsed through the collection I could probably find at least a few dozen titles I don't have on CD that I wouldn't mind having digitized.

Just did a quick check online. Seems like these devices are also quite reasonably priced. I will definitely be looking into getting one.

About 20 UK pounds. Also works with a turntable, with moving magnet cartridge.
