From Genesis to Revelation: Ah, but of course!

Traffic (1968): No, that's one that has no words on the cover.

Bankstatement: Even though that's really a Tony Banks album, "Bankstatement" was technically supposed to be the name of the group/artist.

I was just listening to THE FUGITIVE, and remembered something I hadn't thought about in years.

When the album first came out, I read one particular review of it (I don't know where or by who). Commenting on the fact that Tony sang on the album, the reviewer said something like "If you'd like to hear what Genesis would sound like without Phil Collins..."

Umm... was he really imagining a scenario wherein Phil would leave Genesis, and Tony would take over the lead vocals?? Well, that would be quite a compliment to Tony's singing, that's for sure. (Too much of one, IMO, although I think Tony did sound pretty good later on "Big Man" and "Hero for an Hour.")

(from the review) "Ant’s voice is better than ever before on the album – taking singing lessons apparently paid out better than it did for his former band mate Rutherford (they had the same teacher)."

After a recent listen to ACTING VERY STRANGE, I couldn't help but think... Mike must have taken his singing lessons after this album was made...

I pretty much agree with all the positive comments here. TRICK is my favorite Genesis album overall (although, as it happens, my favorite Genesis song is elsewhere). Very evocative, even "magical," and the cover art fits the music nicely. Highlights for me are Entangled and Mad Man Moon, but there's nothing I really don't like. After Peter's departure, the rest of the guys really stepped up and showed what they could do.

BTW, the truth is that the ending of Volcano (which I have no problem with, although I understand where the negative comments are coming from) is pure Hackett! He's the one that wrote that part, and anyone who's heard how out-of-control he gets on some of his solo releases will find that quite unsurprising!

If I remember correctly Never Mind The Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols is officially the whole title of that album and occupies the whole cover, so I reckon it meets your criteria.

Sure, that works. And I'm sure there are many other examples that would work that way. Some I can think of off the top:

    Blood, Sweat & Tears 3

    Fresh Cream

    Live Cream

    Live Cream Volume II

    Led Zeppelin II

    Led Zeppelin III

    This Is The Moody Blues

    Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet

(Just the name of the band in the midst of graffiti. I don't believe the album title is scrawled on the wall anywhere)

Sorry, the album title actually is there.

    Title but not artist's name:

Hotel California. When I bought my copy it had a sticker saying 'Eagles' placed on it.

    Rubber Soul

    Good ones!

There are also examples of an album cover which has NEITHER the title nor the artist's name:

Well, as I said, that would be (and has been) a whole separate thread.

Yes there are loads of those but I'm having real trouble thinking of either name or title only ones.

Well, as I said, they don't seem to be too common!

After a little thought I realized I knew a whole bunch of them from one artist:

    Artist's name but not title:

    Chicago III

    Chicago at Carnegie Hall

    Chicago V

    Live in Japan

    Chicago VI

    Chicago VII

    Chicago VIII

    Chicago IX: Chicago's Greatest Hits

    Chicago X

    Chicago XI

    Chicago 13

    Chicago XIV

    Greatest Hits Volume II

(Official rule: It's OK if the artist's name is included in the title, as long as it's not the whole title!)

On the old board I started a thread about album covers with no words on them. Here's something a little different.

What albums can you think of that have the artist's name or the album title on the cover, but not both? I'm thinking that neither of these is particularly common, but we'll see...

    Artist's name but not title:

Michael McDonald - If That's What It Takes

    Title but not artist's name:

    The Beatles - Revolver

New Riders of the Purple Sage - Powerglide

Don't have "Meadows". Is this version different from Dragonfly Dreams?

Well, yes, MEADOWS is probably high on the list of Ant albums that Ant fans are unlikely to have!

Anyway, the DRAGONFLY version is a studio recording, while the version on MEADOWS is "live" in the studio with Guillermo Cazenave backing Ant up. A further version on LIVE RADIO SESSIONS (also with Cazenave, two years later) is also "live" in the studio. But there is no significant difference between any of the performances of the song.

Confusingly, in the "interview" portion of LIVE RADIO SESSIONS, Ant talks about "Waiting" as if the studio version had, in fact, been released first.

On another note, it's interesting to note the differences between MEADOWS & LIVE RADIO SESSIONS, because parts of the latter appear to be attempts at recreating parts the former.

    * "Lucy: An Illusion" and "She'll Be Waiting" are performed, in similar versions, on both albums.

    * "The Circle" (by Cazenave) appears in a 4-minute version on MEADOWS, and in a 7-minute version on LIVE.

    * The improvised "Peggy in the Skies Without Diamonds" from MEADOWS is recreated on LIVE as "Peggy in the Skies...".

    * The improvised "The Agent Mulder Never Resolves a Single Case" from MEADOWS is more or less recreated on LIVE as "The Return of the Agent Mulder."

    * Most strangely, the title "Sortilege" is used for one improvised tune on MEADOWS and a different one (similar in mood and tempo, but otherwise not the same tune at all) on LIVE.

...that this song was first released on THE MEADOWS OF ENGLEWOOD (with Guillermo Cazenave), before appearing on PP&P IX: DRAGONFLY DREAMS.

I always assumed that the "live" MEADOWS performance followed the release of the studio version on DRAGONFLY, as would be typical for a "live" version. Only recently did it occur to me that MEADOWS was actually released before DRAGONFLY.

    And now you know!
