I think this is a great song, not quite a 15, but close. Find me another song that is this catchy and has a main riff that is in a meter of 13 and has 13 chord changes.
I prefer most Genesis songs live versus the studio versions. However, this is one of the few that I prefer the studio version. There is a tightness and crispness to it that is great, whereas many live version feel a bit plodding. The tight harmonies at the end are perfect and are absent from live versions as previously…

Don't get me wrong, I like and appreciate the lighter side of Peter's music, all the song you mentioned are IMO great, I also very much respect the ability to write a hit, not every musician can, Peter Hammil for instance or Steve couldn't write a hit to save their lives, I just believe that Peter as an artist truly left a mark and offered something different from others through his more experimental side. I'll freely admit certain, lighter songs of his seem to wear out their welcome with…

It is true that it seems PG's fans can be somewhat viewed as being part of three camps: There's the more reflective, experimental side that appreciates more explorative prog-sounding tracks like Rhythm of the Heat, Family and the Fishing Net, Come Talk To Me, Signal To Noise and And Still. And then there are others that were perhaps introduced to PG with more radio friendly tracks like Solsbury Hill, Shock the Monkey, Sledgehammer, Big Time, Steam and Growing up. Then of course there are…

Wow, thanks for that! Interesting how they filled up so much time with just 4 songs. Crowe acted as the main singer at the time, in keeping with what I've read about that period. Annie isn't used as well as one would hope. The band seems to have changed bassists a lot in 1971 so it's likely that Korner was soon to leave at this point. As for "Living is Easy," I note that most of it does not consist of parts of the later "Things," so the majority of it is otherwise unheard.
As for the…

Personally, I love the live version on Three Sides Live best of all I think - in fact I love every version I've ever heard, to be honest. It's just one of those Genesis songs that energises me whenever I hear it, studio or live. 8)

I got into Genesis aged 17 in 1979. I didn’t like ATTWT but devoured everything else as perhaps only a teenager can.
I’d heard rumours that the next album was to be called Duke and feared the worst.
Then, standing in HMV in Birmingham- this blasted out on their very expensive sound system and sounded superb.
No matter how many times I listen I still find it exciting and its little complexities keep it fresh. Even the sound of the hi-hat at the start is great- Phil can make that sound…

Excited to start listening to this. It's nice to see Phil looking well.

This is the song that started it all for me! I had heard very little of Genesis before this, but after I heard it on the radio I had to check into the album, and then all of the band's works, and eventually many solo works. My favorite song on my favorite 3-man Genesis album.
I agree that it loses a lot in live performances. The overdubbed vocals at the end of the original were the icing on the cake for me, and the loss of them in live versions cannot be made up for.

Here is a short video of the vinyl cutting of the A-side – using the legendary Neumann VMS70 cutting lathe, which was launched in 1970 – still the global standard in lacquer cutting!

The colleague who shot the video chose a beautiful spot for it! :)

Preferences seem to boil down to more or less immediacy, enhanced by the different mixes, fair enough. Personally I've always regarded Peter as a''deep' artist, a seeker, a restless, innovative, and also annoyingly slow-working musician, I think most of his reputation is based on these attributes, then again he has occasionally churned out stuff like Solisbury Hill, In Your Eyes and SledgeHammer, all very nice, pleasant and useful but to me at least, not the side of his that made him unique. I…
