I came across this contemporary review in GOOGLE news today from pitchfork.com. There's some bits of Genesis history here, as well as some band members' comments. I wonder what course the band's career would have taken were they called Gabriel's Angels (the other of Jonathan King's possible names for the band)?

.... or imagine Collin and Hackett never joined the band.

Yep. Their contributions and influence were crucial to the success of Genesis, definitely.

Interesting, thanks for posting. I thought it was more a perspective piece on the band though, it would be cool to have a more in depth 'new' review of the album itself. Maybe by a music reviewer who's never heard it... Like those kids watching in the air tonight.

would that be “in depth” then? For me that’s a different concept (what you suggest). In depth reviews can only be written by people who know a lot of details and have some insights

That was my thought when I read in Steve's book that he could have lived his youth and adulthood in Canada if it were not that his parents got homesick and returned to England. Then, he would have never joined Genesis. He fulfilled his destiny!

Or imagine if Peter never left the band! How long would they have carried on for, and what would their music have sounded like?

With a longer Gabriel stint in the band they would have given up on prog even earlier. They would have tried their hands at shorter songs as well as different styles, if PG's first solo album is any hint. They would have released something akin to Abacab, seventies style (if that makes any sense). Maybe Eno would have been an influence. After all he was influenced by Genesis himself.

In some ways, PG leaving was the natural course of things. Ive seen the guys all saying that they were frustrated with the band being labeled as Peter first, and everyone else secondary. That type of a dynamic can tear a band apart. Still interesting to wonder “what if”.
