I have the feeling there is an influence of Abacab (1981) in Dire Straits' Money for Nothing (1985).
Indiscernible and highly unlikely. Knopfler has spoken about the influence of ZZ Top's guitar sound and Don't Stand So Close To Me by The Police. FeelItComing would probably know better than I, but I'm not aware of MK citing any Genesis influence, Abacab or otherwise.
-
I said that I sensed a kind of influence of 'Abacab' in 'Money for Nothing', not that the latter was actually based on the former, just a personal perception.
And I don't want to begin an argument with you, Backdrifter.

Well, well. Abacab & Money For Nothing. It's possible, I suppose. My default answer is Mark Knopfler's songs are unique and not influenced by anyone ever (except J.J. Cale). I can vaguely hear a similarity.
-
Straight 4/4 drumming, distorted guitar riffs, sparse keyboard parts, and a kind of similar tempo.
I understand what IWIWRD wants to say, but still, the two songs are too different, I can't see any actual influence of one song on the other.
Same kind of energy, maybe. Nothing else to me.

The live version is a bit better!

15!!!
That one is in my all time Genesis Top 20 (I also prefer the Wembley '97 live version)
-
Why there has never been a live album release of Wembley'87?
(Or, going on, anything from Invisible Tour in general? )
-
Always liked this one for its different feel, vibe and dynamics. It was so un-Genesis at the time.

still remember buying the album on day of release and listening to several times in a row...Title track and album still remains a favourite of mine . Yes the live version even better with Mike rocking out. Great tour of 82, with tracks from the album...shame none played on recent tours
-
The only reason I don't give 15 here is that the live version is better, especially the 1986/87 version.

15!
Is it as good as "Firth of fifth"? No!
Is it still worth 15 points? Yes
Is that a contradiction? Erm ... no

Fond memories of this song.
Was helping prepare an older friends wedding venue in the early 1980's
He had his superb hifi. there for the evenings music.
Played this full belt in the large hall before everyone arrived - it sounded absolutely brilliant!!
