Looking For Someone, The Knife and White Mountain

Stagnation, Dusk. Don't have a definite 3rd.

That’s a tough one- a very even yet superb album with no poor tracks and a very consistently high level of quality control.

Huge jump forwards from the debut and had the feeling of being well crafted and finely honed. Went for the Knife, Stagnation and White Mountain but could have gone for any. Dusk is lovely and Looking for Someone is also outstanding. This album has everything and even though Collins would have elevated it in some ways I really like the drumming - very derivative of King Crimson but also very apt.

The B-side is about perfect, so I went for those three tracks.

Looking for someone, visions of angels, stagnation.

Terrific album with a very distinct atmosphere. They seemed to rapidly become comfortable with ambition in terms of songwriting around this time. I think the members who departed after did a great job.

White Mountain is my favorite, a grower.

The obvious choice is The Knife

Then Dusk, wich I appreciate more and more

I chose White Mountain, Stagnation, and The Knife.

Stagnation was always my favourite song off the album and it would probably be in my Top 10 overall for Genesis.

In my teens, I thought The Knife was a powerful track and one of their best songs.

40 years later, I think within the context of the album, it's still a powerful track and I still get an adrenaline rush from the intro.

But that thrill doesn't last and I find overall I actually prefer the five other tracks on the album.

Aside from Stagnation, I chose Dusk and Visions Of Angels.

I listened to the album for the first time in a while after posting on this thread. Dusk is a great song, would swap it for visions of angels in my top 3.

Even though I still chose The Knife, I almost didn't. I feel like it's the standout track on the album, though not entirely in the positive way. The other five songs all contribute to creating a more cohesive vibe on an album whose greatest strength might be the mood it has. The Knife doesn't fit with the rest quite as neatly, though it makes for a great album closer, and it is still undoubtedly a strong song.

This album gets better everytime I hear it and I've had it over 40 years. The Knife , Stagnation , and Looking For Someone for me. This is the first Genesis album, anything before doesn't count , as it was just practiice. Surprised to see how much people like Dusk. It's ok for me but I've always seen it as there to have balance to side 2 being sandwiched between two classics and not strong on its own. I prefer it to Harlequin and FAF

Looking for someone, White mountain and The knife for me ...

When I first got into Genesis, this was the last of their albums that I bought. I'd even got From Genesis To Revelation before this one.

It's an album to which I've never been able to relate. It's all very naive and twee; even The Knife seems a little weak. My feelings have only been compounded over the years as I've gone back to check on what other artists were doing around the same time. You had The Beatles with Let It Be, Led Zeppelin had their third album out, Miles Davis had Bitches Brew while The Stones had only recently released Let It Bleed. All of which knock Genesis's meagre efforts into a cocked hat, I'm afraid to say.

Viewed objectively, subjectively, upside down or from right to left, Trespass simply isn't a very good album.

Thank you for your objective opinion, but don't you sometimes sing to yourself that old Genesis line "How could I be so wrong"?

No, probably because an opinion, by its very definition, can't be wrong. As you rightly say, though, at least my take on Trespass is objective.
